FrontRunner Founder Richie Cohen-Smith is approaching the starting line of a new "Event" in his life - Retirement
After spending 23 years building FrontRunner into Columbus' premier running specialty store, Richie Cohen-Smith will retire at the end of this month.  We will miss his knowledge, leadership and compassion for the sport we love.

In celebration of Richie Cohen-Smith and his success with FrontRunner, an Open House will be held on Sunday December 13th from Noon to 5pm.  All are welcome to attend.  Refreshments will be served throughout the day.

Be Seen and Stay Active this Winter
FrontRunner has all the gear you need to stay warm and to be seen in the cold dark months ahead.  Almost all of our fall/winter apparel and accessories have reflective piping and graphics to increase your visibility.  These garments combine style, performance fabrics and reflective capabilities.  Our great selection of cold weather apparel even includes running pants in special lengths.  So be seen and keep running and walking this winter.
FrontRunner Recycle Challenge
Being "Green" takes effort, at home or at work.  We stepped up our recycling efforts a couple of years ago.  We traded one of our garbage dumpsters for a "Cardboard Only" recycling bin, started separating paper waste with more diligence, and even purchased a  water cooler to reduce our use of bottled beverages.  Bad habits are as tough to break, as good habits are to develop.  These efforts have led to the following FrontRunner recycling accomplishments:
  • Personal Use: bottles, cans, plastic cups and containers reduced by approximately 200 lbs annually.
  • Paper: office paper waste, newspapers and outdated event forms, magazines and manufacturer's catalogs reduced by approximately 1,000 lbs annually.
  • Cardboard: shipping boxes reduced by approximately 5,300 lbs annually.
As a result of these initiatives, FrontRunner's Recycling efforts have resulted in a net saving of about 6,500 lbs/year!

But the above noted recycle efforts are small compared to those achieved by our shoe donation program "Save-A-Sole".  FrontRunner is so thankful for all of your support for this worthy cause. With your help, we have recycled approximately 3,500 pairs of shoes in 2009.  Nevertheless the demand for shoe donations continues to grow.  Therefore, we have set the goal for 2010 to reach 5,000 pairs of donation shoes.  As the months go by, we will keep you informed on our progress.  So, please keep bringing in your old running shoes and we will give them to people who can use them.  Please clean each pair of shoes before making your donation.  Thank you!

Cold Weather Running Tips from the RRCA

(With permission from RunOhio)
The onset of winter needn't bring a seasonal halt to a runner's enthusiasm or routines. Outdoor exercise in the winter can be a pleasurable experience. The major risk posed by running in subfreezing air is frostbite and minor irritations to the respiratory tract. With some minor precautions these risks can be eliminated.
1. Wear clothing in layers so that warm air can be trapped between the layers. Depending on the weather conditions, 2 to 4 layers on the trunk and 1 to 2 layers on the legs are appropriate. It is helpful if the outer layers have vents and zippers to allow excess heat to escape as you become warm. On windy days the outer layer should be of wind resistant material.
2. Clothing made of material which carries the sweat away from the body is best, like wool, silk, or "space age" synthetics like polypropylene or polyester. Avoid cotton as it tends to hold the sweat.
3. Hat and gloves are crucial as these regions of the body have a substantial role in the regulation of body temperature. Mittens tend to be warmer than gloves. On very cold days mittens worn over gloves are very effective. Stocking caps or ski masks are desirable. On very windy days goggles or eye glasses can provide additional protection.
